History of Gunter Softball

Quiet Confidence

We wear it on the back of our shirts, we chalk it on the field, and play by it every spring. A legacy that has continued to grow since 1995. What started out as a trial would soon become a vital part in Gunter’s athletic history. Quiet confidence truly defines the history of softball teams that have gone through Gunter High School, and the challenges they faced.

In 1995, the tradition had just been born. A few key players and Coach Johnathan Ryle helped establish what is now Gunter Softball.

The 1996-1998 Coach, Sappington, was asked about her experience here, she remembered the “challenges” they faced and the memories that will hold a special place in her heart forever. From 2000 – 2007, the Lady Tigers were coached by Marshall Wallace, and led by key player Lindsey Pierce. Throughout the years there have been many great coaches, but one of the more influential coaches was Robert Klick. From 2010-2013 Klick and his girls made history by leading the Gunter Softball team far into the playoffs all four seasons. Kristi Cross, Morgan Harrison, and Katlyn Holmes were top players during Klick’s time at Gunter, and both Katlyn Holmes (Midwestern) and Morgan Harrison ( West Texas A&M)  went on to play at the collegiate level. Katlyn Holmes said what she remembers most about her time with the team is that it taught her, “ to work well with others, and to earn respect because it’s not just given.” This is a lesson she still applies to her life today.

Being a part of Gunter Softball means being a part of something bigger than yourself. Tradition has always played a huge role in Gunter Athletics, and some of the traditions throughout the softball seasons have been: chalking motivational words onto the field before playoff games, wearing eye black glitter, and going to get snowcones the day before playoff games.

Its safe to assume that the trial phase of Gunter Softball is officially over, and the Lady Tigers are continuing to build on their legacy.
