History of Gunter Choir
Nine seniors. Three juniors. One small classroom. This is what Elizabeth Kulbeth walked into on her first day at Gunter in 1992. Now, 23 years later, she has created a thriving choir program, consisting of three high school choirs, two middle school choirs, and roughly 300 elementary students. Before Mrs. Kulbeth arrived, earlier music teachers allowed the use of musical knowledge to inspire people to continue their own passions in fine arts.
When they decided that Gunter was ready to compete against other schools for choir and the musical arts, the first step was to advance to regionals and try to” wow” a judge behind a black curtain. Even though it may appear easy for most students, the malicious curtain actually discouraged many of the competitors. After singing to the void, the students then wait for the results and hope that they placed. If they do, then they continue to the area competition, which is on a higher level of difficulty. Furthermore, if you were lucky enough to make it past the Area round, then you could go further into the coveted State competition. To prepare for the competition, one must be able to sing a song in their own section of either soprano, alto, tenor/baritone, and bass, as well as knowing how the vocals of the song work and reading the notes individually.
The choir program hasn’t been around long, and the list of advisors is short, but the Gunter Tigers have been able to create an incredibly successful and talented group of choir students. They have performed for the State Basketball Tournament, they have won countless competitions, and they have created their own little community within our school.
